Study: Upregulation of specific mRNA levels in rat brain after cell phone exposure
Aim of the study was to check the hypothesis that cell phone irradiation can cause cellular damage to the rat brain leading to increased mRNA transcription of injury-associated proteins. A statistically significant mRNA up-regulation of all investigated injury-associated proteins in the brains of rats exposed to cell phone irradiation was found. The differences in temperature measured were not statistically significant. The authors conclude that relative chronic exposure to cell phone microwave irradiation may result in cumulative injuries that could eventually lead to clinically significant neurological damage.

Review: Modelling the interaction of electromagnetic fields (10 MHz–10 GHz) with the human body: methods and applications
body: methods and applications In this review, computational methods that provide this information through full time-dependent solutions of Maxwell’s equations are summarized briefly. This is followed by an overview of safety and medical-related applications where modelling has contributed significantly to development and understanding of the techniques involved. In particular, applications in the areas of mobile communications, magnetic resonance imaging, hyperthermal therapy and microwave radiometry are highlighted. Finally, examples of modelling the potentially new medical applications of recent technologies such as ultra-wideband microwaves are discussed.

Study: Terahertz Radiation Increases Genomic Instability in Human Lymphocytes
From the abstract: Continuous-wave (CW) 0.1 THz radiation (0.031 mW/ cm2) was applied to dividing lymphocytes for 1, 2 and 24 h and examined the changes in chromosome number of chromosomes 1, 10, 11 and 17 and changes in the replication timing of their centromeres using interphase fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). The authors observed changes in the asynchronous mode of replication of centromeres 11, 17 and 1 (by 40%) after 2 h of exposure and of all four centromeres after 24 h of exposure (by 50%). It is speculated that these effects are caused by radiation-induced low-frequency collective vibrational modes of proteins and DNA.

Study: Electromagnetic noise inhibits radiofrequency radiation-induced DNA damage and reactive oxygen species increase in human lens epithelial cells
From the abstract: The goal of this study was to investigate whether superposing of electromagnetic noise could block or attenuate DNA damage and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) increase of cultured human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) induced by acute exposure to 1.8 GHz radiofrequency field (RF) of the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). From the results the authors conclude that DNA damage induced by 1.8 GHz radiofrequency field for 2 h, which was mainly single strand breaks, may be associated with the increased ROS production. Electromagnetic noise could block RF-induced ROS formation and DNA damage.

EU: DG SANCO Conference: Delivering for Tomorrow's European Consumers
On October 29 and 30, the Directorate General for Health and Consumers (DG SANCO) will host the DG SANCO Future Challenges Exercise in addition to “Delivering for Tomorrow’s European Consumers,” a high-level conference focused on the next decade’s challenges for health, consumer, and food policies in the EU. Among other things, panel discussions will focus on the impact of new technologies on consumer confidence and the prioritization of health actions.

New information about the warning of the cancer researcher Dr. Ronald Herberman on the use of mobile phones
On July 24, the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) published a statement on the warnings of the researcher (see Infoline of July 24, 2008). It is based on expert judgements of authorities in the area of public health, for example the World Health Organisation. AMTA Chief Executive Officer, Chris Althaus, said: “While we recognise that this topic will continue to be subject to speculation and differing scientific opinions, weight must be given to the expert judgements of international authorities considering the results of published, peer-reviewed and replicated scientific research.” These are based on scientific publications and their replications that have been peer reviewed.

On July 26, Louis Slesin, editor of the critical Microware News” gives a statement on an article of the Associated Press, reporting about Herberman’s warnings. Slesin says that the reporting contains a number of errors and mistaken emphases.

On July 31, 2008, the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, reports that Herberman plans to develop a research project focusing on long-term cell phone users. Dr. Herberman said he is holding discussions with others about the project, including a researcher at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and Dr. Devra Davis, director of the Pitt cancer institute's Center for Environmental Oncology.
UK: Teachers want to protect pupils against WLAN radiation
In the United Kingdom the quickly increasing number of WLAN connections has set off a wide public discussion about possible health risks of wireless internet technology. As the newspaper "Daily Mail" reports, among British teachers increasing opposition raises against the use of WLAN technology at schools. What is also important for the increasing concern are some recently published studies stressing the particular health risks of wireless communication. It is made responsible for symptoms like concentration loss, fatigue syndrome, limited memory ability or headaches.
Israel: Health Ministry published advice on cellular phone usage
The report recommended limiting children's exposure to cellular telephones, using a speaker or earphone which is not wireless, and keeping phones away from the body whilst not in use. A recommendation to avoid talking in shielded areas, such as in elevators or trains was also published. The Health Ministry added that the high level of radiation emitted from the antenna of a cellular device was likely to cause health problems by warming the body ('the thermal effect'), the implications of which would be researched in a further line of studies.

Health Canada: “Cellphones safe for children”
Health Canada sees no evidence to support Toronto recommendation on cell phone use by children. According to a news item in the National Post from July 21, 2008 Paul Spendlove, the organisations media officer, wrote in an e-mail: "Health Canada currently sees no scientific reason to consider the use of cell phones as unsafe. There is no convincing evidence of increased risk of disease from exposure to radio frequency electromagnetic fields from cell phones."

This document was jointly prepared by the GSMA and the MMF and gives practical guidance for personnel working at base station and antenna sites on how to take exposure to radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic fields (EMFs) into account in order to make sure applicable exposure guidelines are not exceeded. It is primarily directed at RF workers but some content will be relevant to other workers (for example, rooftop workers) who may have reason to come close to transmitting equipment.

Russian Government Blames Gadgets for Lightning Deaths
In the past two weeks in Russia, over a dozen people were killed or injured in lightning strikes. Leonid Tarkov of the Russian government weather observation center FOBOS says portable electronics are to blame. He said cellular phones and music players are like lightning magnets. He stated, "These things are electromagnetic field carriers. That makes them, in essence, conductors. Thunderbolts are frequently attracted to such things, and hits are often connected with a lethal outcome." Such an idea is considered outlandish by the general scientific community. Virtually all scientists believe that lightning cannot follow the weak electromagnetic fields produced by, among other things, portable electronics. However, scientists do acknowledge that carrying any metallic objects increased your risk of death should lightning happen to strike.,652918/News/,,
